This hands-on 2 weeks workshop is open to actors able to handle monologues & scene work in English & justifying of serious previous training on stage or on camera. In the Breath Actor Training

From inspiration to expression, learning to work "On the Breath" generates a joyful, reliable, physically based acting technique that creates spontaneous, imaginative and exciting actors who draw their strength from the text through the breath.

Whatever your training has been up until now, this workshop is designed to pick up from where you leave off. You will be introduced to techniques that deepen your emotional range, enhance your trust, enliven your creativity and teach how to work within the playwright's world in a way that weaves the language, the music and the style of the text into a an expression of character based in the instrument that is you.

 Free your unconscious through technique
 Allow the camera to do the acting
 Choose, think-through, prepare and commit fully to the character’s wants & needs
 Practice attention to the specifics of the scene
 Adapt to accidents and unforeseen events

The “IRIS” Character Exercises
Classes of JoAnna Beckson

 

 

The "IRIS" character exercise is based on the idiosyncratic behavior of a person well known to the actor. It is not an impersonation, but an improvisation clearly based on the person known, i.e. a friend, husband, wife, parent, spouse, etc. The exercise is not gender specific, being an observation exercise to be applied to a character as needed for an appropriate characterization.

THE IMAGINATIVE & DARING USE OF SELF. Doing physically difficult, urgent, important “independent tasks.” Defining emotional & imaginary circumstances & the hidden truths of the action. PREPARATION : Getting “Ready to Roll” through self-stimulation into the “fullness of beginning”. Working on the impediment.

 

Voice, Diction & Speech

Objectives:

 Cultivate an improved understanding of many of the processes, effects and problems of speech communication.
 Develop an understanding of Standard American pronunciation and be able to recognize and modify any variations you may use.
 Develop and demonstrate the skills necessary to speak American English with adequate variety and clarity.
 Approach oral communication with increased self-confidence and reduced presentation anxiety.

 

Technique and Scene Study

The work:

 Application and practice of improvisation approach.

    (auditions, rehearsals, performance)
 Its relationship to all phases: reading, rehearsing and performance.
 Continued cold readings.
 Discuss and apply components of creating a role.
 Continue components – stress specifics.
 Object exercises – for actor’s theatrical truth.

Acting International space is located in the heart of the Manhattan's theatre districs at 311 West 43rd Street. It's nested within Manhattan Theatre Club and has a reception, a lobby, and a spacious 160 m2 loft with a panoramic view over Manhattan.
