John Charles
Murphy, an internationally acclaimed theatre artist, has
performed all over the world with one of the most famous of
theatre companies, MUMMENSCHANZ. He has taught myriad facets
of theatre for over 20 years to students in Italy and seven
other countries in Europe, as well as the United States. Since
returning to New York in 2000, Murphy has taught at The New
School, Playwrights Horizons, Pace University and SUNY, in
addition to his private classes.
Building upon his Masters of Arts in Theatre and Dance from
the University of Colorado, Murphy studied at the acclaimed
schools of Jacques Lecoq and Etienne Decroux in Paris under a
Fulbright-Hays Award. Since that time, besides his work with
MUMMENSCHANZ, he has acted on the stage in the U.S.; in
Italian film, television, and commercials; has been featured
in circus and variety shows; and has conducted research in
physical theatre and movement studies in settings throughout
Europe.
Murphy has directed
the American classics and Shakespeare. He has extensive
experience developing original works through research &
improvisation.
ON MUMMENSCHANZ
No one can forget their hilarious piece created with rolls of
toilet paper serving as eyes and mouths. You've probably seen
it. That was MUMMENSCHANZ. Murphy toured for more than 15
years as one of three members of this celebrated visual
theatre company known for its touching and sharp magical
trickery - a winning combination of theatre fit dance,
puppetry fit mime, painting 8C sculpture. Murphy collaborated
with the founders to create sc tour Parade. MUMMENSCHANZ
performed 3 years on Broadway and toured world-class venues
and festivals from Edinburgh to Singapore, appearing on six
continents.
