Bill
Galarno began his New York professional theatre
life as an off-Broadway actor in Sartre’s The
Flies (Orestes) and in Lessing’s Nathan the Wise
(as the Knight-Templar). He soon moved on to
roles in Broadway tours of The Sound of Music
(Rolf), Move Over Mrs. Markham (opposite Julia
Meade) and 110 in the Shade, with Will Geer.
On Broadway, he appeared at Lincoln Center in
Candide (with Alan Arkin and Madeline Kahn) and
Abe Lincoln in Illinois (starring Sam
Waterston); he also reprised his Sound of Music
role at New York’s City Center.
In the U.S., he has acted in at least 150
productions. He also performed Shakespeare in
London, and was featured in Absurdities, a
musical revue, in Amsterdam in 1976.
Bill holds a B.A. degree in Speech and Theatre
from Michigan State University. He also studied
with teacher-director Lloyd Richards in New York
City. He has taught speech at Ohio University
and musical theatre at Turtle Bay Music School
in Manhattan.
He has staged more than 60 productions
throughout the U.S. Recent directorial chores
include You Can’t Take It With You at Fordham
University (in New York City) and Neil Simon’s
Rumors at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
In New York City, he has staged The Boy Friend
for the St. Bart’s Players, Split Ends at
Theatre East, California Suite for Actors
Alliance, and Love Letters at South Street
Seaport.
A produced playwright, Bill has won both an
ASCAP Award for Kiss, Comrades, Kiss! and a CAPS
Grant from the New York State Council on the
Arts (For the Love of Suzanne, produced at New
York’s Martinique Theatre in 1974). He is also
the author of The Boston Broadcast of 1932,which
premiered at Actors Theatre of Nantucket, played
the provinces, and was revived at the University
of Iowa in 2001.
On feature film, he has appeared in The Horror
of Party Beach, (20th Century Fox); New York
Nights (1984); Violated (1986) with John Heard;
and with Richard Gere in The Hoax.
